The ability of music to tell stories is exemplified in Reinecke's
"Marchengestalten", where the worlds of fantasy and fairytale are evoked
from the title itself. Combining the talents of pianist, composer, and
teacher, with those of painter and poet, his works cover a wide variety
of genres. In his lifetime, he witnessed the formation of the German
Romantic School, from the beginning to its end. The programmatic form of
opus 147 make these delightful pieces eminently suitable background
music for the tales they are narrating.
